Monograma. Ibero-American Journal of Culture and Thought aims to spread and promote, in an academic environment, the enriching culture of this Spanish region.

Peer-to-Peer Blind System

Monograma uses the peer review process to ensure the quality and validity of the research papers received. The anonymity of both the reviewer and the author is maintained.

The Scientific Committee receives the originals anonymously to proceed to their evaluation. The evaluation process is conducted by two external reviewers who will evaluate and determine if the received papers conform to the lines of interest of the journal and meet the indispensable requirements of a scientific paper, if they comply with the publication norms. They will also evaluate the originality, relevance and quality of the written work. Following the evaluation, a report will be issued on the advisability of its publication.

The research papers may be either accepted, accepted with modifications, or rejected. In case of conflict or any complaint by the author, the decision of acceptance or rejection will be taken by the Scientific Committee. The favourable opinion of both evaluators is a necessary condition for the publication. In case of one positive opinion and one negative one, the article will be evaluated by a third member of the Committee, and its opinion will be final. They will then proceed to take one of the following decisions:

  1. Acceptance of the submitted work
  2. Acceptance of the submitted work with modifications; it requires revision
  3. Rejection

Those works accepted with modifications will be returned to the author for their reformulation. The author will be given one month to complete the changes and submit the work again.

The maximum time allowed between the reception of the paper and the communication of its acceptance or rejection to the author is 3 months. The date of receipt and the date of acceptance are included at the bottom of the published articles. The authors will receive one copy of the issue in which they participate.

The submitted papers must be original and unpublished. While they are in the process of evaluation or editing, they should not be sent to any other publication. If a reviewer considers that the article is a true copy of another work, he must notify the editors, providing detailed citations of the previous work. If there is any suspicion of plagiarism, the collaborators must notify the editors as well.


Desirable quality criteria

The criteria on which the acceptance or rejection of the papers submitted to the journal are based are as follows:

  1. Originality. The submitted works must be original and unpublished.
  2. Novelty, importance and relevance (updated)
  3. Presentation according to the standards published by the journal


Plagiarism policy

Monograma guarantees that the group of people involved in the editorial process follows international ethical standards in the publication of the articles. Therefore:

The editor should ensure the maximum quality during the peer review process and that all papers be reviewed by qualified reviewers. He must ensure that reviewers contribute to the detection of plagiarism and potential ethical anomalies. It must ensure that the journal has clear publication rules and that they are carried out with no exceptions. Finally, he must ensure that authors and evaluators follow appropriate research and publication conducts.

If there is evidence of plagiarism, the editor will contact the authors of the work in order to clarify the circumstances.

Likewise, the editor must ensure the anonymity of the collaborations received before they are sent to external reviewers.

The author(s) agrees that his/her work(s) are the result of research carried out in an ethical manner. He/she should not send the manuscript simultaneously to other journals for evaluation. The authors must take responsibility for the published research. All collaborations must be original and unpublished.

The following will be considered as bad practices: citing sources without having read them; not having corrected erroneous interpretations of data observed in other articles; copying other people’s works, claiming them as their own, as well as the total or partial duplicity of researches; not indicating that an article has been published previously -which should be expressly indicated.

The reviewers will inform the editor about any possible fraud or plagiarism in the evaluated research. They should evaluate the articles in an objective manner, provide reasons for rejecting an article, and/or provide suggestions that may strengthen the publication.

It will be considered as a bad practice to accept the review of a work if there is a lack of the  necessary availability of time to comply with the sending of the arbitration in a period of time considered not to delay the communication to the author of the acceptance or rejection of his/her work. Likewise, it will be considered as a bad practice not notifying the editorial committee of the journal if the text subject to review contains plagiarized or manipulated data, as well as if they find any important similarity between the article to be reviewed and another article already published or in the review process in another journal.

Monograma uses Crossref’s Similarity Check tool for plagiarism detection in whatever form it takes.

Open access policy

Monograma is free and freely accessible. Users can have full and free access to the digital content. The journal offers immediate and free access to its content through its website for better use of scholars and researchers, and it informs publicly about the authors’ email address in order to promote the exchange of information in a global context.


Digital preservation of archives policy

Monograma is aware that digital documents can be modified and transformed due to different causes, such as technological changes, altering the information it contains; therefore, Monograma guarantees that its contents maintain their integrity, authenticity, reliability, legibility and functionalities through the technological tools provided by Portico, a digital preservation service on servers independent of those of this Magazine. Monograma ensures the security, availability and access to its contents in the future.

Topics and Scope

The journal Monograma was born as a result of the digital revolution. This revolution promotes a free access to scientific and literary writing, and an immeasurable dissemination of cultural creation. An ocean of digital data makes texts, images and sounds circulate among continents. Numerous journals like this one navigate in this ocean; journals that bring to its edge, along with the material demeanour of the tradition, a reading know-how, a seeing know-how, and a living know-how that are part of the intangible heritage of humanity. Monograma joins this novel transit with a specific route and a challenging longing: it travels the space between the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula, transferring from one part to another the testimonies of very diverse cultures; cultures also brought closer by the similarity and interweaving of their many languages.

According to a program orientation to Ibero-American heritage, the journal is composed of articles on different topics: literature, thought, painting, music, architecture, cinema, visual culture and theatre, produced in the Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking world. The scientific activity of Monograma, rooted in cultural studies and the inevitable pluralism of the humanistic disciplines, is combined with the declared purpose of defending the cultural heritage of this area, threatened by the explosion of information and the increasingly evident indifference of the digital media in the face of the certain and the false, the pertinent and the impertinent. In this digital reality, to us it seems essential to abide by the formal regulations and the material supports of the philological practice; without neglecting, in a hermeneutic way and with the necessary scepticism, the sense of this material and immaterial legacy.

In this, the contemporary culture seems very close to the culture of the first humanism, animated by a philological rigour, as well as by spiritual concerns. The title of our journal, Monograma, evokes not only the classicist tradition that projects a splendid model of work on multiple patrimonies, but also this division between the text, the meaning and the image. Even though it cannot start from a monolithic unit ‒neither in the existing reality of the heritage, nor in its possible interpretations‒ the dialogue must reach an understanding, which goes hand in hand with a respect for the diversities that represent the richness of the human race, and the solidarity that responds to the tragedies inscribed in the very cultural heritage. Language is the place of this understanding and scientific discussion among human beings. The careful reading of works of cultural creation must be an optimal model that we transmit to future generations.

Monograma is open to researchers from any university, either national or international, as well as professionals from the humanistic field,  who want to share their unpublished and original content of their research.

Ethical Declaration on Publication and Good Practices

Monograma shows its commitment to the academic community by guaranteeing the ethics and quality of the articles published in it. It declares its commitment to the respect and integrity of the works already published, protecting and respecting both the content of the articles and their integrity. If a text is identified as plagiarism or its content as fraudulent, it will be deleted or not published. The authors agree to respect this rule and must guarantee that the article and the materials associated with it are original or do not infringe any copyrights; therefore, they will be duly referenced and treated with academic rigour, following the citation and reference standards specified by the journal. The authors commit themselves to their text not been presented or published previously in another means of dissemination. In addition to this, the authors must justify, in the case of a shared authorship, that there was a full consensus of all the authors involved, and that it has not been presented or published previously in another means of dissemination.

Monograma follows the stated procedure of assessment and review by means of the system of blind peers. It has a system of article selection based on the review of articles by (anonymous and peer) external reviewers, following criteria based exclusively on the scientific relevance of the article, and the originality, clarity and relevance of the submitted work. In compliance with these good practices, Monograma guarantees at all times the confidentiality of the review process, the anonymity of the evaluators and the authors, the reviewed content, the reasoned report issued by the evaluators, and any other communication issued by the Scientific Committee, if appropriate. Likewise, the confidentiality will be maintained regarding any possible clarifications, claims or complaints that an author wishes to send to the journal committees or to the reviewers of the article.

  1. Journal policies regarding authorship and contribution

The reviewers help the editors in making editorial decisions and they can assist the author (s) in the improvement of the manuscript through the communication of the editors with the authors.

  1. Complaints and appeals.

The editors will establish grievance and complaint mechanisms against the published contents. The editors commit to investigating these accusations and following up on the revision or retraction processes, if necessary.

  1. Journal policies on conflicts of interest / interests in conflict

The editors commit to refusing to participate in the review or any other editorial process in the event that they may have a conflict of interest with the submitted work because of its competitive, collaborative or any other relationship or connection with any of the authors or institutions linked to the submitted manuscript. In these cases, the editors in question must request other co-editors, associate editors or the Scientific Committee to assume the responsibilities inherent to their function.

  1. Journal policy on ethical supervision

If the editors suspect, during the verification of the work’s authenticity, that it does not respect the legal requirements regarding the book and the copyright, or plagiarism, they should inform the author (s). If there are any potential conflicts of interest that may have influenced the results or interpretations of the results in the work presented, the authors must include information about them in their work.

  1. Policy of the journal on intellectual property

The authors agree that both the research presented in the manuscript and the text itself are original. The authorship of the work must be attributed to those who have developed the research on which the work presented is based. Neither the editors nor any of the editorial staff will disclose the content or any other information related to the manuscripts submitted for consideration, except the author (s) themselves, the reviewers, the potential reviewers, and, in some circumstances, those individuals responsible for the journal’s Scientific Committee.

  1. Corrections after the publication

Monograma declares its commitment to the integrity of the published works. The editors will edit as quickly as possible any published data or information that be recognized as erroneous, deceptive or fraudulent after its publication. The editors will inform the author (s) of these circumstances and will wait for a response from the author (s) before taking any editorial decision. If the editors are not satisfied or if the response is not given, they may decide to retract what was published, once the decision is ratified by the Scientific Committee.
